Can Sports Psychology Improve an Athlete’s Performance?
Motion capture technology has advanced the training methods and improved the competitive athlete’s performance in baseball, football, basketball, golf and just about every other type of competition and athletic endeavour. Athletes are always looking for an edge to improve performance in whatever sport they happen to play. Exactly how do the players in both amateur and professional sports benefit from motion capture technology?
Motion Capture technology works by capturing an athlete’s movements on camera and then using computer software to view and analyze those movements. The process works by attaching a series of sensors to the body of the subject being studied, having the subject make certain athletic moves and having those moves digitally captured by the special computer software designed for this specific application.
What you get is a frame-by-frame breakdown of a particular athletic motion that can be analyzed and dissected to see if anything that is being done is either wrong or can changed to get better results. Such analysis can be helpful for teaching athletes the proper techniques of their sport, for helping injured athletes rehabilitate and for refining the movements of already very accomplished sports performers.
Golf is one of the most obvious examples of a sport where this technology can be used to great effect. The golf swing can be broken down into its many different parts. By recording the swing, a professional golf instructor can detect any problems starting with the stance and covering the take-away, turn, back swing, swing and follow-through. A skilled eye can detect an elbow that is out of place and even whether or not the head is in the right position at the moment of impact.
Not only can the golf instructor get a good visual picture of the complete swing, but the computer software can measure the deviation from the “ideal” swing at different points in the motion. If the relationship of the elbow to the body is off by 10%, that area can be focused on until it approaches the ideal angle.
Sometimes a baseball player goes into a batting slump and has no idea that he is doing something different than he normally does. A slight change in a batting stance, grip or swing can absolutely affect the athlete’s performance. The same motion capture technology can also detect problems a pitcher may be having. Everything from the angle at which the pitcher releases the ball to how he distributes his weight can be accurately measured, analyzed and corrected.
In the super-competitive world of a professional athlete, the pressure to perform at the highest level can be enormous. There are so many players just waiting to step in and step up to replace any athlete that falters even just a little bit. Every advantage or edge an athlete can get, they will take. Athletes see sports psychologists, spend endless hours lifting weights and train very hard to maximize their performance on the field or in the competition.
In order to improve performance an athlete needs to take advantage of both traditional methods of training and learning and the newest technologies designed to enhance performance. Professionals and amateurs alike can benefit from incorporating motion capture technology into their training program.
